My Story

In 2009, I was employed at a firm in Arlington, Texas. I had a burning desire to become an entrepreneur, but I wasn’t sure what all that entailed. The Arlington firm had a handful of clients who lived in the Southlake area and were asking us to open an office closer to them. My employer and I formed a new partnership and opened Knutson CPA in Southlake in June, 2010 in a two-room executive suite. Not knowing exactly how to get this effort off the ground, we immediately hiredLindsay to help us market the firm and find new clients. It seemed like such a foreign concept to other accounting firms for us to have a real marketing effort in place. We found Southlake to be a welcoming community, and we still love being involved in our great city. I now focus wholeheartedly on Knutson CPA in Southlake, and my former partner is still thriving in Arlington.

Up ‘Til Now

As the firm grew, we were blessed with wonderful clients who trusted us, not just as their accountants, but as trusted advisors. The more we helped entrepreneurs thrive in their businesses, we realized that the timeclock and timesheet were not our friends. Tracking and billing every quarter hour actually pitted us against our clients who wanted us to work faster while we wanted to spend quality time and do a good job. So, we took a big leap of faith and threw out the time sheets.

Once we ditched the time sheets our team experienced a huge mind shift away from the internal measure of time tracking toward client wants, client goals, and client results. We became able to think strategically about how to better serve our clients. We began to quote and bill up front so clients wouldn’t have to worry about surprise invoices. Then, we discovered ROWE(link) and implemented a Results Only Work Environment for our team. Our team has said working in a ROWE – working where we want, when we want as long as the work gets done- makes Knutson CPA a wonderful place to serve clients.

My Passion for Profits

I believe that having a profitable business is the intention of every entrepreneur. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs find themselves in business for years and discover they are not running profitable businesses.

In case you are not familiar with the Profit First concept, it is a method developed and documented by business author Mike Michalowicz. Immediately after its introduction, Profit First became the most popular book of all time on how to systematically and easily grow profits in any business.

Our firm is one of a select few to provide businesses with guidance and support using the Profit First methods. I have become a Certified Profit First Professional so that I can coach our clients through creating a system to measure and ensure profitability and sustain a healthy business.

My Tidying Journey

I am on a journey from confused clutter to calm profitability, which began with reading Profit First, continued through many ah-ha moments while reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and evolved into tidying up my personal and company finances, my home, and the focus I have with my business clients at Knutson CPA.
